History

The Club has a strong proud history in both New Zealand Hockey and the Canterbury Hockey Competition.

At the 1976 Montreal Olympics – The Club proudly contributed 6 Players to the Gold medal winning team: Barry Maister, Selwyn Maister, Paul Ackerly, John Christenson, Thur Borren and the captain Tony Ineson.

The Club was also home to NZ Hockey Legend C.V. Walter. As coach of the side, C.V. famously wore his pyjamas and Dressing gown to games in protest of the early morning starts!

More recent Internationals; Michael Bevin (Commonwealth Silver Medallist), Peter Stafford (Commonwealth Silver Medallist), Andrew Hastie,  Darren Smith (Commonwealth Silver Medallist), Bryce Collins, Lincoln Churchill, Hugh Copland and Andy Hayward, have all plied their trade with the University of Canterbury Hockey Club.

Club Highlights

The University of Canterbury Hockey club was established in 1921.

The Club contributed five players to the 1976 Olympic Gold Medal winning team at Montreal.

In the 1960's and 1970's the Men's Team won the Senior Championship 13 years in a row.

The Women's team won four Senior Champioships before their 1996, 1997 and 1998 success.

In 1998 the Women's team contributed two players to the bronze medal winning NZ Women at the Commonwealth games in Kuala Lumpur.

Both the Men's and Women's senior sides have carried their successes on to the annual South Island super six tournament. The women were victorious in 1997 and 1998, whilst the men won the title in 1996 and 1999.

Eleven UC Hockey players (six men, five women) were selected for the 1998 NZ Universities teams who participated in an international tournament in Sydney in February 1999. Their oppositions included men and women from Australia and South Africa, as well as an Indian men's side and a NSW state women's side. The NZ Universities men won the tournament outright, beating Australia in the final. The women's team finished runners up to NSW in the final but received the trophy due to being the best placed university team at the end of the competition.

In keeping with the club's proudest tradition of excellence, three players have spent a season playing in the Dutch national hockey league which is reported to be the strongest competition in the world. Andrew Hastie was the first New Zealand male to play in this league.
