Scholarships

UC Hockey aims to provide support for top players to play hockey with the club. The following page shows the scholarships currently available, and the Terms and conditions for all UC Hockey Scholarships.

C V Walter:

1x Mens and 1x Women Available

This scholarship is named in honour of the late great C. V. Walter. C. V. captained the Black Sticks at the 1948 Olympic Games; his association with the UC Hockey Club as both a player and coach spanned 54 years.
Purpose
To encourage new players (having finished secondary school), to join the club, play for the top team available and to assist them with both the cost of playing and their own development.
Full fees for the season
Entry into the UC Sport Programme.
A full playing uniform
Commit to two seasons with UC Hockey (both the scholarship year, and the year after).
Full attendance at all games including holidays (appropriate leave may be granted by the Coach). Unsatisfactory attendance will result in the termination of the scholarship.
To partake in the UC Sport program including weekly gym sessions, seminars and workshops
To trial for a Canterbury Representative team in the year the scholarship is awarded.
Display an interest in contributing to the club by means of one-off coaching sessions, umpiring or administration duties.

Criteria for Selection

Applicants should write a one page document (standard font size and formatting) which should include, but is not limited to the following;
Highest team obtained, including all representative teams;
Any awards or scholarships awarded;
Attitude and Commitment to the sport (eg travel, time, volunteering);
Why you want to play for UC Hockey.
Please also attach a written reference from a past coach or respected member of the hockey community.

Selection Process

All applicants will be evaluated by a selection committee consisting of the Head coach, the UC Hockey Elite Development Committee member and the UC Hockey President. The recipient must be chosen by majority. The scholarship recipient is to be notified prior to or at the naming of the team.

Keith Thomson Umpiring and Coaching Scholarships

‘KT’ is a former player and long-serving coach of the club. He is a former hockey and cricket international, and an accomplished umpire. These scholarships include funding for aspiring coaches and umpires to take Level One and Two accreditation courses, and a mentoring program to help in the recipients’ development. In return, the recipient is required to provide reasonable coaching or umpiring services to the club while a member.
A varying number of these scholarships is available each year, depending on the number and quality of applicants. To apply, please email the club President at president@uchockey.co.nz to notify them of your interest – applications are accepted at any time.
